Wellington High Performance Aquatics

Wellington High Performance Aquatics (WHPA) is a training centre established to develop youth involved in aquatic sports to achieve at international levels. It is principally sponsored by Wellington Airport and Infratil with funding from Wellington City Council, NZ Community Trust and Community Trust of Wellington. WHPA has relocated a world-class diving coach and is being employed by the centre to train an elite diving squad in Wellington. The aim is to expand over time to include other aquatic sports.

Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards Wellington Airport joins forces with Wellington Community Trust each year to recognise voluntary organisations that do so much to make our community a better place. These awards provide a way for people in the community to say thank you, as well as allowing those within the organisation to nominate their group to receive a reward for all their hard work. Wellington Airport recognises the value of volunteers and their work in strengthening the community.

The community awards are first held in the five council regions Kapiti, Porirua, Hutt City, Lower Hutt and Wellington city, then winners from these regions attend the regional award ceremony at the Wellington Airport.

Nominations for the 2010 Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards are now closed.

Council region awards will be presented during August and September, with the finals being held at Wellington Airport on Thursday 23 September 2010. Watch this space!

The 2009 Wellington Airport Community Awards Supreme winner is Computer Access New Zealand Trust.
CANZ runs an annual e-Day where electronic equipment waste is collected, assessed and separated for reuse, refurbishment or recycling. e-Day raises awareness of the benefits of recycling computers and the hazardous nature of electronic waste while offering households and schools an easy way and sustainable way to dispose of old computers and mobile phones. The event has grown to now include 39 centres across New Zealand, and has gone from collecting 54 tonnes of e-waste in 2006 to 976 tonnes of e-waste diverted from landfills in 2009.

Computer Access New Zealand Trust will represent the Wellington region at the Trustpower National Awards in Nelson/Tasman Region, March 2010.

The Wellys - Community Service

Wellington Airport are proud to sponsor the Community Service category at this years Wellingtonian of the Year Awards. This category celebrates our unsung heroes, those who often work tirelessly behind the scenes, and fulfil crucial community functions.

The Wellingtonian of the Year Awards (The Wellys) are a celebration of the many great individuals across all sectors of the community who make our region such an exciting and vibrant place to live an work

This year is the 22nd Wellingtonian of the Year. The awards will be presented at a dinner on 25 November 2010.

A big pat on the back to volunteer stalwart Margaret Rankine for her service to Eastbourne, particularly her involvement in the Eastern Bay community’s Red Cross and the local Civil Defence organisation.

The Wild at Heart Spirit Awards are presented annually by Wellington Airport to a Year 13 student from each of the five local colleges. The awards recognise and celebrate students who believe in the importance of community - and are self-motivated and selfless. Spirit Awardees demonstrate a broad contribution to their college during their time there as a student. They have develop good relationships, treat others with respect and concern, go out of their way to give service to their school or community projects, and are good ambassadors for their college. The recipients receive a scholarship of $1500 towards furthering their education.

Life Flight Trust

The team at Wellington Airport is proud to provide Life Flight Trust with financial assistance to support the service’s operations, making your donations to the Trust go further.

With Life Flight Trust’s Air Rescue Centre based at Wellington Airport, we see first hand the vital service the team at Life Flight Trust provides our community.

Wellington Airport CEO, Steven Fitzgerald, says “Our partnership helps The Life Trust operate a viable service to the community. Through our support of rescue services and the Life Flight Trust, our rescue teams are working together to save lives.”

Marine Education Centre

Wellington Airport has been a long time supporter of the Marine Education Centre project. You can find out more information about Wellington Marine Education Conservation Trust and Education Centre through their website: www.aquariumnz.org.nz.

If you're travelling internationally through Wellington Airport look out for our fish tank in International departures - you can see some of our wonderful "wild" fish from the airports south coast. Our friends from the Marine Education Centre help us look after them.

Oto the Octopus, who lived here at the airport in the Marine Centre Display is currently being looked after at The Baithouse, the current home of the Island Bay Marine Education Centre. Education Centre staff have reported to us that Oto is very happy, and he is looking forward to seeing all his friends again in the future.

 

World of Wearable Arts TM

Wellington Airport is proud to be a key supporter in WOW's™ Wellington campaign because the very concept of WOW™ embodies perfectly the 'Wild at Heart' atmosphere engendered by Wellington Airport. WOW™ is a homegrown creative concept, and begun in Nelson in 1988 with a small show in a wool shed! Since then it has grown to an extravaganza of creativity held over two weekends. 2005 was the first year for WOW to be held here in Wellington.

If you come through the airport throughout March or September, look out for our beautiful WOW™ displays! In the past they have featured such illustrious wonders as Alpha Romeo Tango by Sylvia Campbell & Wendy Burton, Christchurch (shown).

Wellington Airport have been long-time supporters of Surf Life Saving Clubs in the Eastern Suburbs. Recently we've supported Maranui Surf Life Saving Club with equipment, sponsored a Lifeguard Support and Development programme with Worser Bay Life Saving Club, and assisted the Special Needs Surfing Experience get off the ground.

The New Zealand International Arts Festival 2010 featured a total of 930 artists from 30 countries bringing the latest in international theatre, music, dance and visual arts to New Zealand including 18 Australasian premieres. The New Zealand International Arts Festival presented the best arts the world has to offer to New Zealand. Once again Wellington Airport were proud to be a sponsor of the Festival.
